7 Layer Bars

January 11, 2014

A few months back a friend of mine, who’s also from the Midwest, threw a Midwest Potluck Party. Meaning everyone was to bring a Midwest-style dish to share. It made me feel just like I was at a good ol’ potluck back in Minnesota. There were lots of hot dishes, meat & potatoes, jellos desserts, and bars. I decided to bring the dish my mother would bring to every potluck: 7 layer bars (or sometimes referred to magic cookie bars). I must admit the ones I made were not as good as hers. I guess making them a trillion times would mean you have perfected it.

7 Layer Bars

Difficulty: Easy
Prep Time: 20 min
Cook Time: 15-20 min
Total Time: 40 min
Yield: 16-20 bars
Taste: Good

1 stick (1/2 cup) butter, melted
1.5 cups graham crackers, crushed (about 1.5 packages)
1 cup nuts, finely chopped (I suggest pecans or walnuts)
1 cup chocolate chips
1 cup butterscotch chips
1 1/3 cup coconut flakes
1 can (15 oz) condensed sweetened milk

1) Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

2) Add melted butter to graham crackers and mix well. Press graham cracker mixture evenly into the bottom of a 9×13-inch pan.

3) Pour chopped nuts on top of graham cracker base, followed by chocolate and butterscotch chips. Spread coconut flakes over the top of the morsels. Finally top coconut with condensed sweetened milk.

4) Bake in oven for 15-20 minutes.
